Surviving the School Holidays: Staying Organised at Home

The school holidays can be a welcome break from routine - but they can also throw your household into a bit of chaos. Between outings, activities, and kids at home full-time, it’s no surprise if things start to feel a little out of sync.

If the house is looking a bit upside down and the to-do list is growing, here are a few simple, practical ways to stay organised and bring some calm into the chaos.

Go easy on yourself (and the routine)

Not every day needs to be structured or productive. It’s okay if the house is messier than usual or if routines fall by the wayside. Give yourself permission to let some things slide - especially when the kids are home all day.

Set up simple systems that help

Even small organising tweaks can make everyday life run more smoothly:

• A basket by the door for hats, sunscreen, and library books

• A snack station the kids can help themselves from

• A daily checklist of small tasks to do before screen time

Declutter one space together

If the kids are old enough, choose one small space to reset together - a toy shelf, art supplies drawer, or bookshelf. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just a quick refresh to make the space easier to use (and easier to keep tidy).

Plan for quiet pockets during the day

Create a few quiet moments each day where everyone does their own thing - reading, drawing, or puzzles. It gives you a breather and gives them a break from screens and stimulation (and each other!).

You don’t have to do it all

If the house feels a little more cluttered than usual or routines are all over the place, that’s okay. School holidays are a juggle - even a few small changes can help make things feel a little more manageable.

And most importantly, take time to enjoy the break - even in the mess and mayhem.
